Be a designer of your experience
We all design, but weโre not all aware weโre doing it.
Iโve been exploring the space of what it means to be a ๐ฎ๐ช๐ฏ๐ฅ๐ง๐ถ๐ญ ๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ด๐ช๐จ๐ฏ๐ฆ๐ณ - someone aware of designing the life around them.
People who have studied design or if the word designer is in your job title, are probably a little more comfortable thinking of themselves as designers. But Iโve worked with lots of people who donโt see themselves as designers yet make design decisions all the time.
It seems to me everyone designs, but weโre not all aware weโre doing it.
Iโm very open to being challenged on this thinking, but Iโve been wondering:
โข If you are a writer, are you a designer of stories?
โข If you are an entrepreneur, are you a designer of business?
โข If you are an educator, are you a designer of learning?
โข If you are a coach, are you a designer of transformation?
โข If you are influencing or changing policies, are you a designer of systems?
โข If you are creating change in the world, are you part of designing it?
โข If you make or influence decisions at work and home, are you a designer of relationships?
โข If youโre a parent, are you designing your childโs first experiences?
โข If you are a self-learner, are you a designer of you?
The world is full of experiences, services, organisations and interactions that have been designed. Some mindfully, and others not so much.
I wonder that if you donโt intentionally design experiences, they are ๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ด๐ช๐จ๐ฏ๐ฆ๐ฅ ๐ฃ๐บ ๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ง๐ข๐ถ๐ญ๐ต for you.
It seems like we could all consider ourselves potential designers, of course, it doesnโt matter if you do or donโt call yourself one. What does seem useful though is that if more people saw that they are the ๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ด๐ช๐จ๐ฏ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ด ๐ฐ๐ง ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ช๐ณ ๐ฆ๐น๐ฑ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ช๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ค๐ฆ, this could make them more aware that they have the power and responsibility to change it.
